One of a Kind Oval Mother of Pearl Pendant. Set in Sterling Silver. The bead wire surrounding the scalloped bezel is Sterling Silver with 3 - 18 Karat accent beads. It hangs on an 18 Karat Gold Chain.
The back of the pendant has a screen texture with an image of a shell from an antique dictionary. The picture is covered in natural mica. Because of the paper, this piece is not suitable for swimming!
The Mother of Pearl piece is an antique button (or embellishment for fashion) from a button factory that went out of business. It measures one and a half inches across and 1.25 inches from top to bottom. The 18 Karat gold chain is 18 inches long.
The screen texture is a symbol of my memories of the Gulf House. When it was storming there were often high winds blowing through the house. Sometimes when this happened the screens would make noise. They made sort of a wizzing sound. I have a vivid memory of that sound. Sleeping there, so close to nature, feeling the wind blow over me, listening to the harmony of the wind and the screens was very calming. Nothing but me and Mother Nature.
The dictionary image is an honoring of my father. When he would help me with my homework he never told me what a word meant. I always had to look it up. The dictionary we used was The American College Dictionary and it was his when he was in college. He had written his name in it along with the name of his dorm and his room number. I didn't like having to look up a word for a meaning or spelling but I remember liking the black and white drawn images. When I went to college he gave the dictionary to me and I was touched. I cherished it and I still do. It has become a different type (no pun intended) of a family heirloom.
It is my wish that when worn this pendant will remind you of all things beachy - shells, shand, breeze, waves, walks, and most of all calm.
