The earrings measure 1.75 inches long and 1 inch wide. They hang on handmade 20 gauge ear wires.

The reclaimed blue pieces of slag are a by-product of smelting iron in which raw ore is heated and the desired iron ore is collected. When the impurities cool this waste material is formed. The material, which is similar to glass, was collected, cut and polished. The glass "stones" are set in sterling sliver.

The texture of the silver surrounding the "stone" is from roller printed linen. One earring is printed from the warp side and one is printed from the weft. For the past three years, living at The Penland School of Craft in the Appalachian Mountains, I was inspired by the deep history of textiles in this region.  Learning about how fabric is made and woven inspired the texture of these earrings.
